Online Advertising: Facebook Vs Google
Search Engine Marketing company WordStream, have released an infographic detailing the key differences between the Online Advertising Titans; Google and Facebook.
The statistics that WordStream gathered show that Google still has the upperhand in end user engagement, reach, CTRs and generated revenue.
The caveat being that this of course is measured on currently available data, and what WordStream has encountered in their own online adventures.

Nice overview Aidan. For me it’s clear that right now, Google is the best choice, it performs good and I like that you have plenty of options in terms of ad formats, to reach people in different ways. I do wonder how Facebook is going to move on, if they really will make big changes or not, and what their intention is in terms of advertising.
MatieSeptember 6, 2012 at 4:40 am
Google is miles ahead of FB in that aspect, despite the fact that Google Plus is still a modest site competing with FB in terms of social media platforms.
Unless Facebook improves its Pages features and their ad program, I don’t see them going up.
KennyKSeptember 8, 2012 at 8:16 am
Yes, definitely changes are needed. However, I wonder if Facebook users are going to put up with all changes that are coming. Do they want a social media site, a place to interact, or do they want to be an an advertising platform? I think the first. There are already worries about privacy, and Facebook can’t afford to make too many mistakes.

Wow, no doubt this is a very comprehensive infographic with some interesting details. In this regard, it should be fair and understand that Google is light years ahead of Facebook, its main competitor. Of course we are talking about different platforms beyond the advertising order is the same. In my personal experience, I believe that Google’s advertising performance is superior, for one simple reason: it is not obvious. On Facebook, every ad that appears is annoying and is considered almost like an invasion of privacy, like a pinch. On the other hand, Google advertising is more widespread and is not as invasive. At least that’s my view on that matter, but I’m no expert.

Thanks for posting the whole thing. It’s a great opportunity to see some effective graphic usage too.
Before I read this information, I would have put my money on Google as well. Google is everywhere and in all formats. It’s pervasive, or some might say invasive, on the internet. Facebook, I think, is still more a social venue than one where people go to find information. Information seekers are the ones who click on ads. I haven’t tried Facebook ads yet for any of my marketing, but Google ads are working great.

Dude, Google has the edge.. So keep your money on Google. smh
cheaSeptember 8, 2012 at 11:38 am
Nice. This is actually really good news for me because I can’t stand Facebook for marketing. I always avoid Facebook even as a social networking site. So, hopefully Google keeps the edge. Thanks for the info.
KennyKSeptember 10, 2012 at 9:21 am
Even if you don’t like Facebook, it might not be wise to avoid it. For personal use, I understand it, but if you have a business it’s better to use Facebook to your advantage.

That’s interesting that they are comparing Google Content network to Facebook, as opposed to AdWords as a whole. If you did AdWords as a whole, it runs circles around Facebook. Contextual ads don’t perform nearly as good as Search driven ads.
TashWordSeptember 10, 2012 at 10:15 pm
Interesting to see data like that but it still comes back to who your audience is – I mean, if you’re after people who liv on Facebook why not advertise there?
Personally, I’d advertise on Google over Facebook. And I know as a consumer I’ve never clicked on a Facebook ad but I have used a number of ads on Google over the years.

I did click on a few FB ads, but way more on Google ads on different websites. You’re right about the audience, if they hang out on Facebook, you can definitely try to start a campaign there to target them.
pinklilySeptember 11, 2012 at 11:40 am
That’s a good overview. Facebook has a large audience but the main objective of most people using FB is to interact with peers among other things. Google is still the premier choice of marketing knowing that they established a good reputation in terms of advertising.

That’s a fantastic infographic! It breaks all the necessary information down into an easy-to-digest picture. I’ve only recently begun experimenting with google ads, but have yet to try facebook ads. The majority of my blog’s traffic comes from google searches, so I just assumed that google ads were the way to go. Plus, they sent me a gift card, so I didn’t have anything to lose. But your infographic makes me want to try a facebook ad to see if there’s any effect on blog traffic.

Google is hands down the better advertising platform. Facebook is good especially for more social campaigns but Google ads are everywhere and you can have your ad displayed on virtually any website. Google offers free $100 advertising credit every now and then which is a plus as well.
vida_llevaresSeptember 25, 2012 at 2:35 am
I think there is still so much work to be done to strengthen the value of Facebook as an advertising platform. Although Facebook has already penetrated mainstream advertising, it is still lagging behind Google. Google still remains to be top-of-the-mind.

Great article. I find that many people get annoyed with ads on Facebook. They are not there looking for busineses, like they may be during a Google search. If you can organically create a following on Facebook through quality posts and information consumers can use, it will go a lot further than buying ad space on Facebook.
johnthomas1433October 8, 2012 at 2:00 pm
I recommend Google over Facebook when it comes to online advertising. Google provides targeted visitors to our website, that do convert well. What does Facebook do? Send a heap of teens to our site, who knows only to “like” something?
Google ads are expensive when compared to Facebook. I do agree with that. But I rather pay for quality traffic that converts well, rather than junk traffic.

I am not surprised that Google is the better option. When Google came into the advertising realm the changed the way advertisements were done and that caught everyone else by surprise. They had a better search engine and as such were able to give advertisers better results. Facebook is the new kid on the block and are catching up. Remember Facebook never really started out focusing on ad revenues they only just started doing that, especially now that it is a publicly traded company.

A very informative overview, shining much needed light on an all to common problem.

I am currently working on a project and will be advertising my new webpage soon. This article shed some light on unfamiliar territory and made it clear that I should choose google.
pst3227November 4, 2012 at 2:12 pm
I think Google is better. I know I never click on any Facebook ads. Then again, I don’t really click on Google ads either but I think that’s more effective.

This is very helpful for those of us with limited budgets who are trying to get the most bang for our bucks. As a user of both Facebook ads and Google Adwords, I would have to say that although we seemed to have a more targeted audience with Facebook, none of our projects with them were profitable. We found it a confusing and difficult company to work with. Perhaps things will be different now that Facebook is a public company with shareholders to answer to.
vida_llevaresNovember 9, 2012 at 3:00 pm
This is very true. For those with limited budgets, we cannot afford to just invest in everything and do trial-and-error approach. We have to be choosy and smart with our investments. There should already be a guarantee that our investment in something will yield results later on.
johnthomas1433November 14, 2012 at 3:29 pm
If people are indeed limited with your budget then neither Facebook nor Adwords is meant for you. PPC shall always cost more, because they are actually sending quality traffic, and if we are able to convert them well, we can certainly make a killing from them.
But if you are so limited in your funds then PPC is not menat for you. I advice you to try out ventures like PTC which are much cheaper alternatives, though you wont find much quality in the traffic that you receive.

I personally and professionally prefer Google over Facebook for advertising any day. I just think that Google has become established as the number one search engine and Google Plus has a very professional tone to it. Facebook is more targeted towards a younger crowd. That’s my 2 cents.
Lloyd L.December 6, 2012 at 7:43 pm
This is a great picture you’ve got here its very detailed. Personally I go with google for advertising just because it has a huge monoply of the internet. Facebook is more targeted to just social media and not usually good for people wanting to buy something. If you are just looking for more exposure and increased views facebook might be good but if you want to sell something I’d go with google.
