Ever heard of Alexa.com, particularly one of its amazing features, the toolbar? Well, if you haven’t installed yet the Alexa toolbar to your website, then, join me as we take a quick tour and discover the true benefits that a website owner could get from installing the Alexa toolbar:

1.      Faster and easier web browsing

This is one of the best traits of installing the Alexa toolbar, faster and easier web surfing is achievable due to its Google search feature integration, giving you access to do research by just typing the words or phrase straight into the toolbar.

2.      Check on your competitor’s performance

Installing the Alexa toolbar gives a website owner the chance to actually see how his/her opponent is performing in the industry they are situated by the relevant information that he/she could get from visiting their site. Details such as website description, home page thumbnail picture, figures of their website’s average traffic volume, reviews of the website, link of other related sites as well as the historical background of the site, when it started online, contact information of the owner and other verifiable facts which give proofs of the site’s popularity through the number of incoming links going back to that site.

3.      Keep you informed with your traffic generation target

The Alexa toolbar is an effective tool in keeping you on track with your overall website traffic generation target. It provides you valuable information about your website’s ranking not only on page reviews, but also on the number of users who visited your site at any given day.

4.      An effective tool to measure the entire standing of your website’s blog section

For those with blog sites, by registering to Alexa.com and installing their script or widget to your blog, you can already make a follow-up with your blogs overall standing. The widget installed to your blog will automatically determine the number of online users who actually visited your blog.

5.      Accessibility to anyone who wishes to download Alexa toolbar

The Alexa toolbar is being offered as a free plug-in that can be easily downloaded into your browser. It holds 2 versions, one for the Internet Explorer and the other one for Firefox also referred to as “Sparky”. As one becomes a registered member of Alexa.com, his/her website’s details would be added as relevant source of information to the community the moment they use the Alexa toolbar. The information provided by the new member will turn out as related links, traffic rankings and a lot more for the community to benefit.

I do hope you have found some valuable reasons to try this great tool, the Alexa toolbar. Generally, Alexa.com and its amazing features like the toolbar and widgets are ideal for website owners who aim to get relevant information on page ranking, present marketing efforts or market reach as well as internet visibility. The only downside that one should be aware of while you are web surfing with the use of the Alexa toolbar is the collection of various information related to your likes and dislikes on the sites you have just visited, so be ready to get advertisements from these products.

Are you ready now to download the Alexa toolbar? Weigh all the possibilities, both the positive and negative views, then, decide where your website would benefit most. Remember, everything you want online is just a click away from your fingertips, so take your time and gather your thoughts before hitting that button.

I actually think that one of the most important aspects was overlooked.
When it comes to selling advertisements or site flipping, one of the key metrics used is your Alexa Rank (Arguably not the best). The higher your rank, the more you can charge/the more likely you’ll be accepted to a marketplace (BuySellAds.com for example).

Now as you may or may not know, Alexa Rank is based on people who have a browser with it built in, or are using the toolbar/plugin. So it stands to reason, if you spend enough time on your own site, you’d be mad not to have it installed on your own machine, as this will bolster your own rankings.

Aidan, you bring up the very point that actually led me to read this article in the first place. I wanted to know if I installed this toolbar on my websites, would it assist me with seeing where we stand with our Alexa rating. I have a long way to go before getting a high ranking but hopefully this toolbar would be a good start.

  2. TashWordSeptember 4, 2012 at 4:14 pmReply

    That’s an excellent point Aidan.

I was about to say the alexa ranking only carries so much weight because it only tracks your site’s value to people using the toolbar – making it a lesser measure in my mind.

However, adding your own site uses part of the alexa ranking is strategic thinking.

This is an interesting tool for those who work with such information as it provides first level data and updated way. I think in this case is justified. For the standard user, it might be a little inconvenient, because he can not get real advantage of its functionality. Anyway, I insist, is an interesting plug-in for those who have a website online and need to know certain issues. I didn’t know that possibility, thanks for sharing.

Nice article and I think Aidan’s addition is an important one. The toolbar gives a lot of useful information and can give you an edge over those who don’t use it.

I’ve heard both positive and negative things about Alexa ranking. Some put a lot of stock into it, others think it’s pretty much useless in the grand scheme of things and prefer to go straight to the SERPs to get their information.

I don’t use the Alexa toolbar, but I do use a plug-in for Firefox called SEO Quake (it’s free) that shows Alexa rating as well as a whole slew of other information like PR, backlinks, twitter and facebook mentions, keyword density etc.

I think Alexa can play a role in determining the value of your website, but Google Page Rank is king. I used to use Alexa Tool Bar when I had some websites my first year of College. By using Alexa Tool Bar while browsing your sites, it will increase the rank of said sites. Every little bit helps when trying to ad value to your websites.

Does anyone know if the Alexa tracking is bundled into any other toolbars? I’m just trying to get a sense of the size of it’s user base in relation to the statistics it provides. I’m assuming most of it’s users are people working in the SEO/Marketing space. Not necessarily your average consumer base.

I love using the Alexa toolbar to check on my site’s ranking. I feel like I have accomplished something and that all of my hardwork is paying off whenever I see my ranking improve. Its a great feeling. I also use to see check out at how well my competitor’s are doing. Its actually great to know that I can connect with them and ask them for help.

Though I do agree that Alexa is one of the metric used, when we try to sell a website, its the most flawed metric that has ever existed. I shall explain why.

The Alexa rank for your website depends on the visitors who visit your website. And what’s the catch? They need to have the Alexa toolbar installed in their system, for them to count as a “visitor”. Apart from advertising their toolbar, what’s the use of this metric then? A website that have poor Alexa rank doesn’t mean that they don’t get visitors. It just mean that they don’t get much visitors who had installed the Alexa toolbar.

If you search the web, you shall plenty of tools and services, offering you to skyrocket your Alexa rankings. I have tried out few such tools, and all you have to do is to autosurf websites, meaning all you need to do is to keep your pc on with their software running. And yes, my ranking did improve.

So whats the point of using such a flawed system?

After reading this post after another on the alexa toolbar, I’m going to give it a try. Specifically for the ability to check my competitors. I don’t know how much the toolbar offers that the website doesn’t, but I will go ahead and give it a go and see what is different/enhanced/worth keeping installed. Thanks for the recommendation.

Helpful! I don’t know much about Alexa, but a website I use for my blog requires you to give your Alexa rank. Therefore, this might be a worthwhile step.

Thank you for this Alexa update. I thought that Alexa had fallen out of favor and gone the way of MySpace. It’s good to know that they’ve made some worthwhile improvements to their toolbar and made it even easier to use.

The problem with Alexa toolbar is that they are used only by newbie webmasters and everyone outside of them shall never use Alexa and probably shall not even have heard about it, and nor shall be your clients and customers. So when that happens, having an Alexa toolbar installed in your system is not going you any advantage.

Its simple a waste of time.
