Many budding entrepreneurs who have limited start-up capitals follow the route of other individuals who have succeeded in doing online home based businesses. Aside from the tempting benefits that one could get from running a business at home such as big savings on fuel, rental expense and time consumed in traveling from home to work or your business office, the mere fact that you can do this online business within the boundaries of your home is already a convincing factor.

To be successful in any online home based business takes a lot of time, energy, patience and dedication. There are also important areas you need to consider before you take the final stage of pursuing this type of business. Below are some of the areas you must be aware of:

1.      Creation of a good website

Nowadays, having a website isn’t the only ruling factor for the entire success of an online home based business. There are many aspects you need to look into and one of them is the creation of a good website where people could visit. You must invest time and money in hiring the best webmasters who could create an awesome website produce a unique domain name. Be creative when designing your website. Try to adopt a professional look so that online visitors will have the impression that your website is a reliable and trustworthy one.

2.      Choice of target consumers

Before you come up with a product or service to offer online, you must already have some idea who will be your choice of target consumers. Learn what are their specific needs, wants or interests and from these ideas create an effective marketing campaign.

 3.      Financial resources

For any business to run smoothly, whether it is a home based one or outside your home, money counts most to help you get started. You still need to invest even a short amount of capital in starting an online home based business. Determine the vital expenses that you need to prioritize like buying an updated PC, subscribing the most reliable and budget-friendly internet plan package for continuous and undisrupted internet connection or the different marketing tools that you still need to advertise your business.

4.      Search engine optimization

Even start-up online businesses are concerned with SEO purposes. Proper selection of relevant keywords associated with your type of online business will give you better positioning in the market you want to get in and higher chances for your online users to locate you easily through online search. Companies are more than willing to spend money, time and energy just to get their online businesses on top ranking positions.

5.      Proper monitoring

This is also an important aspect in any online home based business. Keeping records on how your marketing tools like ads, banners and other means of promotion are performing well, will give you a clearer view which areas need further enhancement. Proper monitoring of your overall performance will keep you on track with your business goals.

The idea of doing an online home based business is very appealing to anyone, especially to those who have been just laid-off from work. It can also be a perfect option to those individuals who are tired of the regular 9-5 working hours in the office and desire to be the boss of their own businesses. Get moving on for time is precious.

Having run a home based business for over 9 years, I attest that it has many advantages :) It also doesn’t suit everyone and it is important to understand it takes dedication and discipline to succeed as there is no boss looking over your shoulder.

If you want to run a real business (from home or elsewhere), you need to treat it as such – put the money and time into making a good website, learning about business and providing excellent customer service. Skimping on things to save a dollar often ends up costing more in the long run.

Like TashWord said, you need the passion for your business if not the drive isn’t just there to make the business work.

I have to take into account all the above, but sometimes it is easier to read to take them to practice. Anyway, are very important in creating a solid foundation for our business online. I think beyond that, it’s always good to have some extra knowledge that allows us to bring our experience to a level a little more professional. We just have to invest a little time and dedication to achieve success in these endeavors.

Very interesting article. I was thinking about starting my own home based business, but decided against it because I wouldn’t know what I was doing. I might reconsider it now because it doesn’t seem too overwhelming now with this information.

      Hi Jaruri,
I’ve read your comment and I know how you feel as I felt the same way before I ventured into starting my own online business from home. Like most newbies, I was overwhelmed by information overload and just do not know where and how to start until a good friend of mine advised me the best and most effective way : learn from someone who has done it and has a good reputation for coaching people to start an online business with a tested system. Ever since, I never look back and has done not too bad if i may say so. I’m proud to be affiliated with the program today. If you’re open to checking the program out, you can go here => https://www.facebook.com/homebasedonlinebusiness/app_186269294792285. Let me know if you need any further help. Cheers.

      Hi Ghy,
I do agree the information in this article is very interesting. I’m sure you would agree that good information is of use if we don’t put them into action right away. Great advice to someone who is interested in starting their own business! If more people were to spend more and take more interest in one single type of customer then more would be successful. I look forward to seeing more of your blog and advice.

Some good things pointed out in this article are true if you want to succeed in a online business, one thing I find really important is always do your research on whatever you are going to do.
Check your competition and see how you can out shine them.
A good business can be done on a shoestring budget but in the long term its worth the investment on making on right.

Nice informative Article Doree keep up the good work.

I believe the single most valuable advice I would give to someone wanting to start a home-based business is to remember that it IS business. Too many people today think that having a successful business is like winning the lottery. You should know the basic principles of business before attempting to build one.

Nice tips you have here. However, talking about these tips is easier than putting them into practice. While the general ideas remain the same, each tip has to be modified for each type of business, and to be successful you have to understand thos deviations. I started my business 11 years ago. SInce then I had many false starts since the industry changed a month or so after I started, long before I was prepared to handle it. While I had the drive to learn and do things right, I never had the capitol coming from an impoverished background.THis doesn’t mean I won’t be able to eventually be sucessful only. It just means someone in my situation may requires decades of work before they see any ROI. I suggest that all newbiews take two jobs: the new business and a part time job to pay the bills. It will reduce the time you have to run the business, but in the long run the additional outside revenue will be a great asset.

Wow, loved this article. You summarized the most pertinent facts in a most easily understandable and accessible way. Thank you for that.

I do think that you covered all the bases. Also, I found over the last 10 years that managing my time properly (being one’s most important resource) was my biggest challenge. Once I got a hold of managing my important resources like time and money…everything takes on a life of its own.

    Great article. Cheers.

Nice post. There are a lot of things to consider when starting a home based business. I think a lot of people get caught up in the fact that they can work from home and don’t take into consideration the time and discipline it takes. I think one large hurdle to starting a home based business would be finances. As you mentioned, you usually do need at least a little money to help get you started. You need to plan for things like computers, marketing etc.

Knowing the loops in online marketing sets you aside from everybody else. But of course that doesn’t always mean that you must hire someone to market your site. Sometimes knowing how things work is a better start. An online home based business has a lot advantages over offline business so there is no reason to avoid setting up one.

My advice is to focus on who exactly you are targeting (ie. who do you want your audience to be?, who is going to buy your products/click your ads? etc.)
You must plan what kind of community is going to be reading about your business.
    Always plan, plan, plan.

An online home business is just like any other business, it takes work, and knowledge, and a clear plan of action. You need to be willing to invest money in the business, and you need to take action. Start educating yourself but most important take action everyday, even if it’s not perfect. I hear from many of my subscribers who have the passion and dream, but aren’t willing to learn what they need to, or risk their own money, or do the hard work necessary to get going.

These are very good tips; especially the one about SEO. I think SEO is a skill that baffles a lot of people. I was very intimidated by SEO when I first started and i’m still a bit intimidated by it. It’s also a great idea to know who your target customer is. I think we forget that step a lot of the time –especially when working online.

I’m still at a loss for how to effectively optimize a website for search engines. i had a couple websites 3 years ago and I could never get a page one Google ranking. I think this time around I’m going to have to hire some help.

Real dedication is needed just like any other business. It’s not because it’s home based that it’s not serious. In fact, if you want to survive, you have to be very serious and prepare every little detail of your online business.

This is great information. I’ve been working as a freelance writer for 2 years now, and the majority of my clients have found me through my website. Still, my client base is much smaller than I’d like, and I know the problem is my website. I’m not good at marketing myself, so your tips will definitely come in handy for someone like me.

Actually you need none of the above to have a home based business. You can earn money online without spending a dime, without having a website.

There are plenty of freelance websites like Freelancer, Odesk, Elance, where you can promote your skills and get paid for the work that you do.

Starting a website, designing it, and doing the seo mat take time and patience, and shall probably cost a bit that may discourage you from your business.

Great article, but something else that should be mentioned is finding your niche. This goes along with knowing your customers, but it’s refining it.
If you make your net too wide, such as “all business people’, ‘all mothers’, etc. you won’t really attract anyone. All they’ll see is that you have something that may help them a little, but not enough.
Narrowing it down to a niche, “corporate executives’, ‘low level business people who want to advance’, ‘new mothers’, etc, will help you get a firm grip on potential clients.

You should add YouTube Videos to this because YouTube is a huge part of successful online businesses. I follow all the above steps for my business and website but YouTube videos have helped me a lot as well.
