How To Be Safe When Doing Your Online Shopping?

July 20, 2012 by Doree Lyn Nuguid in Business with 13 Comments

Nowadays, online shopping is no longer considered a luxury. In fact with our busy schedules, this method of shopping through the internet is done for the main purpose of convenience and necessity. Although, a lot of consumers are already convinced to do their shopping online, there are still risky factors attached to this mode of transaction and security issues on the part of the buyers.

One of the nightmares that any consumer is afraid of facing is “identity theft” which is one of the common cyber crimes happening worldwide as well as the reports of credit card discrepancies or fraud. For you to feel safer while doing online shopping below are some security measures that you can apply:

1.      Check for the website’s security

To know if the website you want to purchase a product or service is truly trustworthy enough to transact, check for the website’s security. You can do that by verifying if the website is secured by the URL. Most legitimate online shopping sites offer full protection to their online buyers by making sure that their sites are safe for any information given by the user like any personal or credit details won’t be hacked easily by cyber criminals. When doing online shopping, see to it that the site has a small lock icon located mostly at the lower right portion of the screen. Take note as well that a website is secured to do business when it starts with HTTPS:// rather than HTTP:// only.

2.      Do your online shopping in a secured environment

If you intend to do some online shopping, be sure you conduct it in a secured environment like the comforts of your home. Never use a public computer or perform any online purchase in public places such as café shops, community libraries or wifi zone areas, since you are not sure about any virus or malware affecting their system. This is not a safe place for your online shopping activities.

3.      Avoid sharing information anywhere

Even though inputting the needed personal details can be tiring when conducting your online shopping, avoid storing or sharing your vital information on any shopping sites servers. Remember, you don’t know exactly who are you dealing with even if it is a well-known online shopping site, so it would be safer and wiser to input any required details every time you do online shopping.

4.      Make use of credit cards

Using your credit card can be more advantageous when doing online shopping because most credit card companies provide consumer protection against identity theft cases. Depending on your credit card companies’ rules on identity theft, you are assured of not being liable fully for any fraudulent transactions done within the set amount or limit agreed upon by your credit card companies and if you report the issue immediately within the 30-60 days period.

The above tips are just some of the safety measures that you can do to ensure a worry-free online shopping. Stay focus as you enter any personal or bank details that the website is asking from you. If you feel unsecured about their mode of payment or there is no consumer protection stated like the “Money back guarantee” or assurance of exchange of goods if delivered with the wrong size or color, then, there is still time to withdraw your order. Be safe and experience an enjoyable online shopping experience by keeping a watchful eye all the time. You never know when you will find a great deal of a bargain. Happy online shopping.

Thank you for the helpful tips. I have been buying online for about a decade now and I have had no bad experiences. Just always seeing that you are on a trusted and secure site (https)…checking that the site is verified and purchasing using a trusted payment gateway and/or credit card.

It really is the most efficient and inexpensive way to shop – when done properly. Great article, once again.

Thanks for all the advice. When one manages money online, this type of question always arises. Many of the sites that I do buy them do not offer the security needed for ou calm when I deposit money in them. We must be very careful with whom we share the information. Had not taken account of the detail to make the operation safe place where I feel comfortable. It’s a detail that I had passed.

I always try to buy at those sites that have more number of security certificates, but that does not always happen.

You presented some great strategist and principles to live by, for any one that buys anything online. I wish I had realized some of your points before I made the mistake of placing a bid on eBay from a public computer.

Now I have a cautionary tale about how not to do this, because the next person that got onto the computer was some how able to log back in to my eBay account and attempt to purchases items from it.

Luckily PayPal thought something seemed suspicious and they notified me, but my account was still out of service for three days.

Very good advice in the article. What I personally like to do is Google the online site for reviews made by other users. Main points I look for are reliability and customer service. If one of those aren’t fulfilled, I doubt i will be shopping there.

Very nice! This should help out new online shoppers who still believe the Internet is a safe place for them. I myself had a problem when initially buying my first online purchase, I wasn’t scammed – but it was an incredibly rude and unresponsive merchant, and eventually had to talk to my credit card company about fixing the problems he caused. All in all – use this article as the best guide to staying safe!

Wonderful advice written here, what I tend to look for is the ( https ) as well. I’ve had a few problem in the past when buying stuff, but none of it was the websites fault. I’m also glad you made the point about using your own computer. You never know what’s out there, and its always best to be on the ball with what could be lurking inside a computer!

Sometimes what you need you can only get online. Same with some business. This article gives great guidance to highlight some of the common things we can do to shop securely over the internet.

I think it’s important to feel comfortable with the site before you even get to the payment process – is the site clear and easy to use or have they done some cheap job of putting it together?
Is the important information easy to find ? If shipping fees are hidden or misleading (like it is for Amazon I’ve found), I won’t buy anything there.

One idea is to buy something small from a site first. If all goes well, you can have more confidence about returning and ordering more. If it doesn’t go well, at leats you have lost less.

I would totally have to agree with this article’s points on not storing your confidential information on their public servers. It’s always important to shop “fresh” each time, because there are many phishing sites out there that will intercept your information and use it unscrupulously.

That’s exactly what I do, Tashword. When I first began using eBay, I had no idea if it was scam-filled or not, so I just bought a $0.50 item and had it shipped to me within a week. I knew then and there that eBay doesn’t tolerate bad sellers and negative-rated sellers tend to crash and burn anyways.
Golden tip there, I always buy smaller items first then wait to see if anything bad goes wrong.
