Serious marketers of businesses and companies wanting to excel in their marketing plans continue to find ways on how they could reach out effectively their target consumers. Amongst the many online marketing tools, social media has been proven to be the best method if you want to influence a bigger crowd. Some promoters prefer the use of Facebook, while others concentrate at their Twitter, Google+ or LinkedIn accounts. Another social media platform that is becoming a new favorite is “Pinterest”.

If by any chance you have already heard or seen this “Pin It” word combination on some websites you have visited, but don’t know really what it is all about, here are some valuable information about “Pinterest” in general and its amazing benefits.

First, let us discuss the term “Pinterest”. It is referred to as the latest platform of social media sites wherein the user can update their intended followers and target niche with captivating videos, content creations like blogs, articles and pictures. All these topics are geared towards sharing through the use of their pin boards and pinning them.

Pinterest’s vital role as a social networking site is to allow the users to share everything they think would be interesting to other individuals.

Below are the 4 amazing benefits of Pinterest that the account users enjoy as privileges:

1.      Relevant source of traffic generation

For some promoters who have opened their Pinterest accounts, they are discovering that it can actually be a relevant source of traffic generation. In fact, Pinterest which has started only in December 2011 proved in a month’s record that it contributed a big difference in the increase of website traffic to those who started using it.

2.      Link building

Have you noticed some websites you have visited with the “Pin It” added to their social sharing links? Pinterest can really enhance you link building purposes by giving you the chance to include it together with other social media sites where your users can click like any other clickable links and be directed to your post or pages, thus, giving you greater business opportunities if these pinners turn out to be your new clients in the end.

3.      Gain access to other social media sites

Through your Pinterest account, you also have access to other social networking sites that you are a member like Facebook or Tumblr by sharing whatever you feel might be appealing to your followers like your blogs or images. This is the best way to reach out and connect to the group and encouraging them to spread the news about your product or service through word of mouth.

4.      Boost your business

Since, Pinterest allows you to advertise your business in a more creative way with the use of its virtual pinboard service, it is like a magnet drawing more onlookers to your site as you share unique photos, posts or other updates of events that might tap their interests and give them the option to repin, like or comment on any of your pins, that in a way is a good source of ideas to boost your business.

Conclusion:

For your information, getting started with Pinterest can be done through invite only, either by sending a request for invitation to the main site of Pinterest or asking a friend who is already a member to formally send you a request, which is the easiest way to get in. Once, you have been invited, the next process of signing-in and setting up your account is already easy. Remember, Pinterest is just one social site where you can focus some of your marketing efforts to attain visibility, remarkable results on your marketing plan, whether you want to increase website traffic or improve your branding awareness campaign program. The bottom line to any of these social networking sites is being able to connect to your chosen group and making them realized that there is a real person behind this account and not just a dummy. I swear it feels like I’ve been hearing more and more about Pinterest every time I turn around. I wonder of the original intent for the website was for it to be used as a marketing too. That was not really the vibe I first got from it. It is kind of cool how that turned out though. I know I have lots of friends that use the site to share their design ideas.

It’s a bit like that :) I remember when it first launched I got a call from our receptionist asking if I was on there. I must admit when I checked it out, I wasn’t all that taken by it, I’ve only researched it for potential marketing strategies, not for personal use.

Haha, I was not really super into the site myself. At the time, it honestly seemed a little too girly for me. My friends were posting recipes and nail art designs. It just was not really something I was interested in. I guess that is why I am so mind blown my how far the site has come now.

Like all other social media, Pinterest has a demographic of users – if that demogrpahic fits your target market it can be useful, but if not it probably has limited value for your business.

From what I have read, it is now harder to get links to your site via Pinterest – they convert links to their affiliate program and embed links rather than making them obvious to users.

I am looking into it for my secondary business which is more visual than my busienss writing services.

Very helpful article, thank you. I have heard that Pinterest tends to attract the female demographic. I do love all the images as it is, in my experience, a bit like checking out an awesome photo album.

I have not integrated it as a marketing tool yet…I have kept it for my free time, however, I am intending to change that very soon. I only hear promising things about it….

I enjoyed this article, thank you. Time for me to take action.

Pinterest could definitely be a useful avenue for your company but only if it fits the crowd that Pinterest pulls. For example, if your company typically caters to men ages 25-35, odds are they won’t be using Pinterest too often.

As with any social media site, it’s important to remember not to lump all your eggs in one basket. Don’t spend too much time on one area while ignoring others. Pinterest may be the most recent “hot site” but a new one is guaranteed to come along in the near future. Learn to market/target aggressively yet intelligently so you don’t waste money and resources with little return.

I definitely have to agree with Dr23. PinInterest looks like an excellent social media marketing method to add to your marketing agenda, but don’t let it be the only one. I like what this article says about how PinInterest is very targeted towards your specific demographic target. This is key! Especially after hours or days of writing a marketing plan.

  8. theaaaJuly 12, 2012 at 7:47 pmReply

Thanks! I have checked out Pinterest before, and I have to agree with some of the other comments. I didn’t think it could be used to advertise. I just saw a lot of people posting quotes or pictures of memes or dresses and other things.

However, I do agree that if your target consumers are likely to be using Pinterest, then it could be a great way to reach out to them, as Facebook seems to be getting a little saturated with marketing and advertising stuff.

I have to be honest, I have never seen a huge uptick in ,my traffic or other aspects using Pinterest. It must be the way that I am using the site because I seem to be the only one who has never had any success with the site! Hopefully I can change this, though, and start to make some serious traffic buzz from the site soon.

I never really saw Pinterest as a way to get more traffic or links (and that interest me the most). I am trying Pinterest tonight.

I am always the last to discover everything (I don’t have a twitter account yet)

  13. Dan723July 17, 2012 at 5:24 amReply

I completely agree with your thoughts about the value of Pinterest. For me the biggest advantage of using the service is the ability to get more targeted traffic. This is especially true if you’re in a niche that’s very visual such as the travel industry or the cooking market. I’ve found that by posting quality images, I can build up a list of targeted followers on Pinterest and greatly increase the traffic to my blog.

In some niches, I’ve actually noticed that I’m getting more traffic from Pinterest that I get from Facebook.

The fact that some Pinterest pins seem to go so viral, seems to prove the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words!

That is a good point. I had not heard of Pintrest until, get this, my mother, ended up showing me something she liked on there.

I kind of ignored it figuring it was something only she used, but it is EVERYWHERE.

That’s what I get for being an internet snob. :P

Pinterest is just an amazing tool. I’m still fairly knew at it, but I already see the benefits. Not to mention how fun and inspiring all those boards can be. Like most Social Media, if used properly, pinterest can propel your business further than regular advertising.

I’ve never used Pinterest, and I must admit, I’m quite hesitant…I’m sure it has benefits (obviously, as detailed above!), but I really do feel I’m reaching the limits of the amount of social media sites I can handle! I do have a blog that I would like to direct more traffic to, however, so maybe it’s worth doing it just for that. Either way, this blog has inspired me to check it out, so I’ll have to decide for myself now!

I still did not have significant experience with Pinterest. I don´t know why the site is not attractive to me. My friends and coworkers do not use it. Perhaps still not popular enough in my country. As all these phenomena of the Internet, maybe arriving a little late to our daily dynamics. I’ll have to try it some day to have an opinion about it. The report illustrates many things I didn´t know about that page.

The website does seem to strike me as more of a journal-type website. I feel like maybe I should try out more of its features, but I can’t get past the feeling that it presents itself too much like a little girl’s private diary. Except its public.

Maybe they should get a facelift or attract more users who can generate changes that will appeal to the larger audience.

Is Pintrest something that’s going to be short lived though. At what point is the fatigue of all of these new social networking platforms going to weigh down on everybody – and are people going to start consolidating and prioritizing their time online.

  27. layzorJuly 27, 2012 at 2:31 pmReply

My girlfriend absolutely loves Pinterest. I guess its because of its layout which attracts her to the site and all she as to do is hover over each picture for more info.
I haven’t mess around with Pinterest before but after reading this article, I think I might just give it a go.

  28. Kieran12345July 29, 2012 at 1:55 pmReply

I would say the greatest advantage of Pinterest lies with those in the creative industries, if you’re in a business that naturally produces a lot of visually pleasing content and you’re know sure how to best put it to use – Pinterest can do wonders. It’s an incredibly effective tool for targeting keywords with ‘big impact’ pictures that grab attention (and as you pointed out, provide free links too!).

Keep an eye out for Pinterest alternatives that are cropping up here and there, perhaps most interestingly is the different demographics these attract given their most popular subject matter. Check out Tapiture.com for a view on what is essentially a male dominated version of Pinterest. An interesting new platform archetype with great things in its future perhaps.

Well, I’ve recently started using Pinterest to try and direct more traffic to my blog. The results are slow, but it does seem to be taking off. I post on a pretty specific topic (spectacles) so I’m hoping that as interest in Pinterest (see what I did there?) grows, so too does the traffic in my direction. I seem to see it being used mostly for girlier fashion and wedding stuff, but not as much for nerdy and retro fashions, which my blog is more directed at. I’m also using we[heart]it, which is similar (but not as widely used) in the hope that the two of them combined can up my traffic in a more long lasting way.

    • omgomgomgAugust 10, 2012 at 12:09 pmReply

One trick I discovered is to find pictures that get repined often then find similar pictures for your board. I think you could find some good pictures of girls in glasses using Google images if you take some time and dig deep into the depths of the internet.

  35. arajooAugust 10, 2012 at 6:28 pmReply

From what I heard pinterest implemented this ‘invite’ only policy for registration in order to get attention from the people. Its not actually an exclusive website as it is easy to sign-up after a while. I am a member of pinterest but I am not so thrilled with what it offer as it seems to be just like any other social bookmarking website for me.

  36. KennyKAugust 14, 2012 at 6:12 pmReply

Through mailing lists that I’m subscribed to, I’ve recently seen advertising for some programs/courses that teach how to make money with Pintererst. Well, they claim that you can make a lot of money with how you setup your profile, pins that you drop (linked to mini sites / affiliate sites that are designed for Pinterest) etc. I think we’ll see more of that soon, just as there have been many people out there who are either making money with sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc, or who claim they can teach you how to do that.

I didn’t try it out though, as I’m not so much into it that I’m willing to spend money on it :) But as with everything, when something is new and has a lot of visitors, then there are always opportunities to use the system to your advantage.

  37. gerkmeisterAugust 16, 2012 at 2:58 pmReply

Just heard on the news today that Pinterest is revamping the site and getting rid of the invite only policy. I use it for backlinks and pin all blog posts selling something.

  38. KennyKAugust 18, 2012 at 7:37 pmReply

I’m quite sure that any loopholes to get free traffic from it will be fixed. I’m not sure about the backlinks, but Pinterest is on the rise, it’s the newest buzz and it’s a good thing to be there, use it, know it inside out and keep an eye on new changes and possibilities.

  49. MouseSeptember 27, 2012 at 2:36 amReply

I agree that social media is a valuable tool for the marketing of businesses of all sizes but I think it can be difficult to do this well, effectively and efficiently. Checking and updating social media accounts can easily take up a large portion of the working day if you don’t have an employee hired specifically to fill that role. However I’ve always wondered about Pinterest, I didn’t see the value in using the site as a conduit for marketing practice. It just all seems so ‘girly’, which of course is great for some, but it’s not really my thing. (Oh btw, there’s a a new site called Tapiture that is sort of like Pinterest for men, if anyone’s interested) Well, I didn’t, but after reading this I can really see what it was that I was missing, especially the idea of connecting other social media accounts to Pinterest which is a great way to get the word out! Of course the opportunity to connect with like minded folk and network within a specific field is what social media is all about, (and catching up with your BFFs too of course ) but Pinterest has always been on the bottom of my personal list for this. But this article has actually given me a few ideas and has motivated me to have a go, it’ll probably be fun if nothing else.

Overall though, the best piece of advice in this article is this; “The bottom line to any of these social networking sites is being able to connect to your chosen group and making them realized(sic) that there is a real person behind this account and not just a dummy.” This is something that I think people don’t always consider when using social media to connect with customers and potential customers.

  50. johnthomas1433October 11, 2012 at 1:56 pmReply

One of the main importance of Pinterest, like pointed out in the blog post, is as a source of traffic generation. I have seen people struggling with seo and traffic generation, receiving thousands of unique visitors to their blog every day, and its not even because of them.

Pinterest does indeed have a unique concept. But how long its gonna stay is something that we need to watch for. Having a business presence in Pinterest may not sound something like a Facebook fan page, and Pinterest at the moment is not built that way.

It can also be used as a source for links. Pinterest links do indeed have authority, and may pass a bit of link juice. These are the only two uses of Pinterest for me.

  51. lisa jean hawkinsOctober 19, 2012 at 7:27 amReply

One thing that I yet to have understand is that what makes Pinterest different from what there is already present in the social media world? We have the ability to share pictures and those people who can see the pictures can indeed re share them, or Pinterest terms, pin them and re-pin them. But isn’t that already there in other social networks already?
