3 Basic Tips: Designing A Unique Business Card
Marketing your business is a continuous process. It doesn’t end in giving out leaflets, creating billboards, giving out promotional items or doing online marketing. One way or another, you have to do some form of advertisement that is within your reach when the need to promote arises in events or situations beyond your control like meeting a former colleague at work or friend in a get-together party. The best marketing tool that you must have at all times is your uniquely designed business card.
Remember your main motive of giving a potential client a business card is to make a formal introduction of your company and the other important detail that they can use to contact you. Business cards have been the most cost-effective way to let your clients know that you exist and can satisfy their needs or wants. In fact over the years, business cards collected by individuals have been mostly used as references or list of contacts for future business deals.
If you intend to give business cards to your target consumers or business associates, here are 3 basic tips to guide you in designing a unique business card:
1. Customize your business logo
When designing your business card, the first step to do is customize your logo. Don’t just resort to using generic made logos. Create your own logo that will represent your company and distinguish if from the rest. Keep in mind that a catchy business card usually has an eye-catching logo printed on the card itself that clients can easily notice.
2. Provide the vital information
A business card is a representation of your company or business, so don’t forget to provide all the necessary information like complete business name, the owner’s name if it is a sole proprietorship, contact number, email address, website address and other details that could help any client contact you easily.
3. Use catchy designs and materials
Many business cards circulate everyday and it is for this reason that you make a business card that will be much appreciated, valued and kept in their wallets or other places wherein they could get quick access when they need your services. Choose attractive designs that will capture one’s attention. Sometimes the material used for the card itself already speaks how stable or credible your company or business like making use of the fine crafted paper materials, metal, plastic or the most trendy even use customized recycled materials from wood to come up with better business cards.
Even in today’s high-tech generation, more entrepreneurs and even top executives still use business cards in their day to day meetings and transactions. Some may find this action traditional, but when given out to the right person can be a great source of connecting to that person that you are there to give an answer or a solution to their particular needs or wants.
Create a business card that would make a lasting impression to the receiver and will encourage him/her to keep your business card for future use. Never stop in marketing your business because this will be your foundation in building up your number of future clients. Show off what you got with a striking business card.

Thanks for your suggestions. Do you know where I can get a solid logo done?

Your business logo must be something engaging and bold. People have a habit of reading from left to right, so it would be helpful if you logo was as far left as you can get it.

Thanks. This seems like a good guide to making a business card. However, I don’t know of any company that could professionally print my business cards. Could you recommend me any? I’m eager to print them, but I’m not sure if they will print out as designed.

I can not emphasize with point number three (unique materials) enough. How often have you lost track of plain vanilla business cards? Probably all the time. However, if you’re handed one that’s the exact size and shape as a business card but made out of a material that’s unusual, let’s say wood, you probably won’t misplace that one.

These are some good tips. I’ve worked for various print shops over the years and am always amazed by the boring cookie cutter mentality that goes into business cards. With the ease of modern printing and design technologies there is no excuse for having a bland card anymore.

@LiquidatorBrunt I totally agree with you. If you want people to notice you and remember you, at least try to have a nice business card people will want to look. If I see a beautiful card on a desk, my eye will be catch and I will probably grab one

I always admired someone who can design a good business card. With a catalog or a website, you have plenty of space to explain, entice, suck the viewer in.
But you have to be brilliant to create a tiny piece of paper that won’t just get lost among other pieces of papers people receive all the time and capture someone’s attention in just a few words!

I currently work for a print shop at my University, and I jsut cannot believe that some businesses still resort to the default layout in most programs. It has become so easy to spot nowadays – and most businesses will know that when they are looking for someone to hire. Guides like these need to be read and understood for any person who wishes to leave a lasting impression with their cards, and bring in the moolah.

I have received three business card last week, and the three of them were dead boring. I have think about your website and how those people should have read it
ARipenedPotatoJuly 25, 2012 at 5:15 am
I think these are great tips, but I wonder if the tips will leave people thinking that an incredibly flashy business card is key to the card’s effectiveness. The card should be interesting and eye-catching, but there is a major difference between that and the card being overly bold and obnoxious.

I am a young professional, and my business card could be described as “standard”. But I think later I’ll bet a more personal design and to better convey the essence of my work. I have the habit of keeping different designs that I see on some website. I like this article and for that reason I will keep it among my favorites. Thanks for the tips.

I think it’s fair to say there are quite a significant number of hours spent dreaming about the ideal business card you’ll one day hand out to everybody you meet, the card will instantly convey your business acumen, likeability and obvious networking worth – a nice dream indeed.
In reality I’ve been handed some very ugly cards in my time that I’m sure were intended to be ‘unique’ or ‘high-impact’ and all I was left wondering was why someone had gone to such effort. Personally I favour a classy, simple design that gets the job done and does it’s best to not offend my eyes!

Great article, I think that having a solid business card is a huge factor in having success in your career. These tips are really helpful as a guideline on how to make a good business card. I’ve seen way too many atrocious business cards in my day, but hopefully that will change.

Great article. Nowadays there are plenty of options when it comes to designing and printing your business cards. If you you have own business I think it’s a must to create something nice and professional. You can use creative elements and decide to use special materials (special paper etc.) to stand out and catch people’s attention.
A good idea is to have two or more variations of your business cards. You could make a special edition, for example one with your business details on a piece of wood, and give that to a limited amount of people, mentioning you also have basic cards. People will definitely feel special if they get a quality card that is special in one way or another.

Cool tips. Thanks for them. I usually use Photoshop to create logos. what do you use?
MoniqueSeibelAugust 16, 2012 at 7:46 am
Very helpful tips. However, do you think business cards are pertinent in the blogging world? I could only image it being helpful at conferences, such as Blogher or similar settings. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I still believe that, in design, less is more. You do not have to fill up your business cards with fancy fonts and numerous colors. For your cards to be catchy, they do not have to look like a mixture of designs and colors. You just have to be smart in the design.

To answer some of the questions above, you can go to a site like Fiverr and get a logo designed for as low as $5 to $10. Any printing company can print up your business cards for you, or you can order them online from a company like VistaPrint. If you are just starting out and on a tight budget you can buy thicker business card paper and print them yourself at home on your printer. Try to make your design stand out from other boring cards. That’s why a simple and easily recognizable logo is important. Also, a tag line if you have one. I personally put my picture up in the left hand corner to help prospects better recognize and remember me from when I gave them the card.

Useful guide for the casual businessman. I cringe whenever I see some variety of Microsoft Office preset business card, with absolutely minimal variation. While not everyone can be a top designer, it certainly doesn’t hurt to stand out.
PurpleRoseOctober 21, 2012 at 4:14 am
Business cards are definitely all about promotion. Keeping your business logo simple yet eye catching is very useful. It is also important to be sure you use quality paper products when creating your own, or having them made. Using a company that offers variety in selection at a good price is always nice.

I just made a killer business card for my part-time computer repair/custom build consulting service based on the BSoD. It is truly killer. It won’t be here until the 3rd of November, else I would totally share and show lol. Sound advice.

These are excellent suggestions. If you’re in the market for business cards, don’t be afraid to look at some pre-designed templates. Many very talented graphic artists have now bundled their work into packages that are very creative and professional. They are also quite affordable.

This is now a current problem of mine. I have recently resigned from my work and since I am still trying to expand my business and professional network and is actually trying to engage in other business that are not within my usual profession, I am now in the process of designing a personal businesscard. My main problem now, before the design itself, is whether to prepare only one general card or to prepare several cards containing the specific works I have. Although I believe this may be confusing even for me. I think business card is a means to sell my services so I really need to be able to make a good decision and choose a good design.

In a networking session, I was given a wooden business card and man was it cool. I found out the guy used Unique Custom Products in Colorado. I called them, they did a great job, and I got them just a few days later. Try them out…I am very happy! I called Ormond at (877) 282-9591 or visit their website at http://www.uniquecustomproducts.com
