You can actively work at getting links to your site of course (e.g. putting your site into directories) and you can attract links to your site (e.g. other blogs and sites citing you as a reference ). Both can be useful in helping people find you and making search engines rank you better, but i think the second category carries more weight and it can only come (legitimately) through quality content on your site in the first place.

I find guest blogging is good for bringing in links and you can do that quite strategically or aim at many links to suit your needs.

I find that commenting on blogs with similar content as your own blog is one of the best SEO methods there is.
I also use some other websites to post articles about my blog in order to gain some traffic, and help myself SEO.
Have you ever heard of the website Triond.com?
Its a website where you are paid to post articles. I do not really care about the small amount of money I make form the articles that were posted, but the articles are posted on PR3 or higher websites with relevant content which really helps to SEO.

There are also companies and even individuals that will help you with building your linking system. I am not sure how valid and reliable these services are…I am actively looking into that now. It may be worth it, if done properly. I am concerned about them doing dodgy scamming.

I do think that there are legit services of this sort out there though. Just have to find them. I have not done enough link building at all. Not yet.

Thank you for another great and informative article. One that made me realize that I need to work on this aspect for sure.

I have just attended a number of webinars on linkbuilding. I really want to take advantage of the things that they have pointed out in this article, such as seo optimization. My website is optimized but I do not have those inbound links from prestigious sites yet. I can totally see the payoff.

I know that some bloggers I know use contests to make people link to their blog.

For example “if you write an article on your blog to talk about the contest on your blog and post a link to my blog, you will be able to participate to a draw to win X, Y or Z”

I am not sure I like that technique to be honest, but it does exist ;)

This is helpful for novice writer or blogger like me. Since it is difficult to ask Google share its audience on your link, it is always necessary to write good quality articles with striking keywords. Directory submission is the most common method to earn exposure of your website. I know some people who use Facebook and Twitter accounts to post their links through their website. Although it doesn’t earn that much views, but it helps.

I think this article provides some good basics for a young blogger. I don’t think most writers realize how many options they have for sharing their work, or ensuring that their work is seen by the most people; this article creates a plan to spread the word more easily.

In the first paragraph, it would appear that you are questioning if link building and backlinks actually lead to better traffic generation. Can you elaborate on that?

Has anybody actually seen noticeable increases in traffic or leads.

There is certainly a correlation between the number and quality of inbound links and your search engine position for keywords, a lot of weight used to be on the href of your link to help with specific keywords but this seems to have faded with Google’s latest updates.

As for if this leads to an increase in traffic, again there have been a number of studies and reports produced on the % of traffic you get for each place on the google search top 10 and the higher up the rank you are the better share you get of the search engine traffic.

Thanks for the advice! I’m pretty new to blogging and I really need all of the help I can get. At the moment I’m just using Facebook. Twitter, Pinterest and we[heart]it, as well as trying to be really specific with my search keywords. I’m adding the odd link to reddit.com as well, which is incidentally where most of my traffic comes from. I think that Pinterest and the keywords are slowly helping to improve my SEO as I seem to be getting more and more hits from Google. Hopefully if I can do some link building as well, I will start to see a regular (albeit, small) income from my blog!

I’ve had some luck getting page one google ranking for less competative three word plus keyword phrases. Generally, when I make a post or put up a page, I’ll ping it, submit to Feedagg, Stumble it, Digg it, Reddit it, Delicious it, submit to SocialAdr to get 200 social bookmarking links over time (for free). I’ll make a couple videos and link back. Tweet it, Pin it and post link to Facebook. Then I’ll write some articles and submit to directories, all linking back to the site/post. I also create backlinks to the videos and articles that are linking back to the site. I’m not sure I know what I’m doing yet, but I am getting results, traffic and some sales.

If you have a blog, one of the things that I would definitely recommend is submitting a few articles (free) on big sites, giving people something to read and get interested in. Then link to other articles on your blog/site. Guest writing can also work good, if you provide a quality article.

Actually link building is not the process of building links. Its simply the process by which we can build quality links. Building too much crappy links to our website doesn’t bring much of a difference in the rankings, but it does make the link building process look like a natural process. That’s the only advantage.

  15. TashWordNovember 27, 2012 at 10:20 pmReply

I agree with johnthomas1433 in that the ideal is quality links (which means relevant sites with creidbility not just junky sites about unrelated topics) to your site.
