20 Popular websites from 10 years ago

A very interesting look at how far we have progressed both aesthetically, and in terms of on-site marketing. It’s hard to imagine that these were some of the top sites out there.

Wow, life before Google (or at least before it was popular). I remember using altavista for search a lot. The problem is, some of these sites are not much better today.

  2. Aidan BradleyDecember 5, 2011 at 9:52 amReplyAuthor

haha, yea I used to be an Altavista man myself (Once I finally stopped getting it confused with Arnie’s famous catch phrase). That and DogPile, if anyone remembers that one :D

It’s strange how it all moves along. Mobile Text Messages turned 19 yesterday… Makes me feel old

I used to use dogpile on a regular basis! That search engine was the bomb, especially for searching audio on the web. It was fairly innovative considering the rise of google.

Websites have gotten so much more attractive with time. I first got online around ten years ago and it’s like stepping back in time.

Some of the blogs that I have been reading for five years now still haven’t changed their theme. It’s time for a change I think.

I remember DogPile and that was the one I used as my favorite. Otherwise, you were stuck going through every search engine, one at the time. but, with Dogpile, it brought all the results into one place.

Wow they looked so different. I guess that’s because coding was rubbish those days. Yahoo used to be very very very dull and I did not used to like it one bit.

Microsoft looks so different. Some of them look the same but Microsoft wow’s me at how different it looks.

MSN and Disney also look different. I am very surprised they did not have IMDB.com to the list. But good list indeed.

Wow this post reminded me of my career as a web developer. We used to frequent these sites for latest tips and tricks and check out how they make use of the available space on a page. Though most of these layouts appear primitive now, they were considered the best during those days.

Sad to see that some of the sites like Altavista, Geocities, Netscape have disappeared. I had created few webpages on Geocities that were lost when Yahoo shut down the site. I agree with Aidan and micheknows, Altavista and Dogpile were really popular at that time and I used them a lot myself.

Thanks for posting the nostalgic article

Haha, I remember doing the same thing. Modeling my sites off their design principles. I was lightning fast with the tr and td tags back then.

    • AllisonJanuary 22, 2012 at 8:15 amReply

I went in search of my Geocities sites a few years ago and was very sad to see they (Geocities) were gone. So many teenhood memories on that site. I built my very first page there.

I remember when I first got online about 12 years ago using Fortunecity.com and Geocities.com to build websites :) I hated the free templates they gave so I bought a book and taught myself html. What I know is kinda out of date know, but at least I know how to manually make a link, format, and all that fun stuff. lol When they closed geocities I went and found my old site before the shutdown and I just couldn’t believe it. That made me feel old lol However, it wasn’t that bad if I do say so myself :)

The free templates did really suck, lol. Remember when they came out with the page designer where you could just drag and drop? It was great for building quick pages for homework assignments. I remember getting an A even though my information was wrong because my “design was clean.” That was 7th grade… I feel old, too!

Ooh, that brought back some memories! Anyone else remember when the big companies first started using the Internet and all had 1024×768 splash pages before you got to any content? Used to take five minutes to load the page over dialup, by which time most of their customers had left… lessons learned, eh?

I miss splash pages! We used to code sites in Notepad and every time we had a “splash” page that told users what to set their resolution to for best site viewing. Of course, this was when I was 13 and we thought changing font color was the most awesome thing ever. Now when I write code it’s entirely different.

  9. AllisonJanuary 21, 2012 at 6:57 amReply

Oh wow, Geocities!! I remember Geocities. It loaded great on dial-up and was awesome at learning how to make websites. It’s incredible how far the internet has come. We’ve gone from site builders like Geocities to site builders that are fully capable content management systems, like Joomla. Sometimes I really miss the old internet.. it seems like things were much simpler then!

You know what I noticed? how much better the designs are two.. and really just the graphics of the sites in general We can come a long way since then

  12. PaladinFebruary 13, 2012 at 11:36 amReply

Wow, those sites are very unappealing. The only one I find decent on there is Disney.

Geocities was a great service. I built my first webpages there. It’s really sad it’s gone now…

  14. HardisonFebruary 15, 2012 at 6:27 pmReply

What a nice blast from the past! Alta Vista was my favorite search engine. I also remember Dogpile, My very first website was also at Geocities and my favorite browser was Netscape. b

Wow! That was such a cool trip down memory lane. Thanks for that. Got me rather nostalgic…

I SO remember actively using at least 3 of those sites regularly….namely Netscape, Alta Vista and Geocities.

I learned so many valuable things form Geocities! Oh well, there are so many new and exciting sites around now to fill the gap, does not mean one cannot get nostalgic for the old though.

This was a great share, cheers. (-:

Wow a trip down memory lane, I remember using Yahoo and Altavista before Google came along. I also used to use Geocities regularly, the websites were dreadful though!

Interesting that back then it was pretty much all news, searches and business websites, there was nothing even similar to Facebook or Twitter, I guess there wasn’t so much of a need for social networking.

  17. SmokeyMarch 13, 2012 at 8:22 amReply

Wow some of those sites bring back memories! It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years huh? Crap where does the time go?

  18. Kiki KannibalMarch 18, 2012 at 10:23 amReply

Wow! I remember using all these websites, Yahoo was my favorite, it looks so old, definitely times are changing, now web browsers have variety of functions. Every website on here looks rough and simple but now websites are lucid and smooth. Memories, now this post made me feel old haha, yes, I’m getting old.

  19. ranjitrgeorgeMarch 19, 2012 at 9:50 pmReply

A well thought of and comprehensive sites list. Actually when I was a little kid, I used to hear these sites a lot and as I grew up, they faded back. Thanks for refreshing.

  20. anotherspacemanMarch 28, 2012 at 1:37 amReply

    GeoCities yayy!

Not enough sites have midi files automatically playing when you open them now.
Genuinely surprised imdb and google weren’t there – I guess the list is focussed on sites that have changed.

  21. ScottyMarch 29, 2012 at 11:50 pmReply

    Thanks for reblogging!

My first website ever was built on Geocities! I cannot believe that was ten years ago! I feel so old…I am only 25!

That is the Yahoo I remember, and loved!!

Wow, how the world has changed in 10 years. I remember some of those websites and how they used to look like that.

ESPN still kind of looks the same though haha :) . Back then those websites probably looked amazing to us because we didn’t know as much web programming as we do today!

Wow, the web has changed so much in 10 years! I cant believe that we used to have to use the web looking like that. I’m surprised that I didn’t cry in agony looking at the mess the internet was.

  24. angeldrbApril 10, 2012 at 11:07 amReply

Haha. The only websites I had been during that time were Yahoo and MSN. But oh, this post made me feel nostalgic for the dial-up modem sound, too! :) )

Wow I cant believe how far the interweb has come since I was 14 years old. I remember watching my parents play around with dos and now the internet is almost in peoples sun glasses I can still hear that dial up sound and I search the web at high speeds.

Looking back on these is really making me think more of the Internet before Google decided it wanted to control everything involved with the web! So I have to say I really miss some of those good old days. Heck, I was just graduating from school and believe it or not would look forward to those CDs in the mail from AOL so I could get more free hours!

  30. youtubedominationJuly 7, 2012 at 3:43 pmReply

Woah, this is pretty cool! I couldn’t even recognize some of the websites because their layouts are so different and even more, I didn’t even know some of theses websites from the good old days before Google took over everything and ads are on every page.

People use to have to worry about phone calls from scammers, and perhaps the unethical contractor, but today’s big worries come from the things that can show up online in a person’s email inbox. Those phone scammers are still around, but most of these types have turned to the Internet to find victims. Apparently, there are a lot of people out there that are easily taken by Internet fraud, and you don’t want to be one of them.^-., http://www.caramoanpackage.com
